When I talk about taking charge of anxiety, the first thing I try to do is simplify the process so it seems achievable, because when you’re going through it it can be very confusing and you can be overcome with a feeling of hopelessness.
So I break it down to two points:
An awareness of the situation, and,
A checklist of what to do.
I’m going to give you an awareness of what’s happening in your mind and body when you’re in these situations when the anxiety or panic symptoms come on. And I’m going to give you a checklist of what to do, both in the moment when you’re feeling the symptoms, and then longer term strategies so that the symptoms don’t come on in the first place.
What I want for you, is that when you find yourself in those situations where you feel the anxiety or panic coming on, you’ll be aware of what’s happening, so it will make sense and it won’t be so scary anymore. And when you get to that stage then you can think, ok, now what’s the checklist, what do I need to do here?
